OP

I'm in academia - not an acafan though. I teach at one of the top ranked schools in my country and my work is closely connected to current policy.

Oh geez, acafan. I just had to look that up.

That's really odd. I'm in academia too (just ABD in history, though; TAing isn't being a real instructor) and I haven't noticed that at all. I can't go into where I go, but I'm in a pretty policy-heavy section of the university (no, I'm not sure why they put our department there). The problem might be really out there nail polish--green instead of pink, for example.

Are you sure people would really frown on it, though? You might be able to get away with it as long as you don't mind frequently removing one kind of nail polish and putting another on depending on the situation; wearing the fun nail polish to teach, but wearing something more conservative to conventions or faculty meetings.

Aside, and this isn't a dig, but: this is one reason top ranked schools suck. They can't forget that they're top ranked schools. : /

OP

I agree about that is a problem with top ranked schools. It's a conservation that needs to happen but unfortunately I don't think it will any time soon.

Yes, I know it's really frown on. I was on a hiring committee and one candidate's use of nail polish, which was a neutral beige-pink, was noted against her. She ultimately got hired at another institution on the other side of the country.

You have no idea how much I want to ask you where you are. That sounds really, really toxic. If they're against neutral beige-pink it sounds like they have a serious chauvinism going on. That is scary as hell. I was hoping you were stuck in adjunct hell*, not entrenched and having to deal with this crap.

Historians tend to be weird. However it's difficult to tell what kind of weird until you're interacting with them. They do however seem cool with makeup and nail polish, at least in my noble second-tier institution.

*I am dreading adjunct hell

Wow, that sounds kind of ridiculous :( Sorry to hear about that, OP. I personally really like nail polish, and while I wouldn't wear my usual stuff to an interview (my favorite color I have is a really loud/bright blue), but a toned-down neutral color seems like it should be OK.. :(

That's some serious bullshit OP.

Wow that sounds incredible. Certainly in Britain nail polish is very popular, but there might be some job interviews where you wouldn't wear say really long nails with designs but short neat nails, even painted a strong colour, would be fine as long as you were dressed smartly. Even at Oxford or Cambridge!

That's just about the last job sector I expected to hear, OP. I teach in one of the officially 'elite' universities in my country and outlandish fashion choices - or simply a basic inability to dress oneself - is so endemic that the smart business types are the ones who stand out. At least in the humanities.
