Dishonored

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't generally like first person games, but I heard this one was pretty good. Would you recommend it?

Re: Dishonored

Yes, I would recommend it.
I normally hate first person games. I often can't play them because I get motion sick while playing. Sometimes it even triggers migraines. So, yeah, not a fan, not accustomed to them. But I wanted to play Dishonored so badly that I tried it. And I can only speak for myself, but it atually worked quite well.
I like the stealth options and it has some replay value because you can play the game in different ways and level up different skills. While I still think it got a bit over-hyped and I didn't like Corvo as a silent protagonist (because there really was no reason for that), it was an enjoyable game.
Also, the Outsider is a cool character.

If you liked Dishonored, and you feel you can handle it, the Thief games (biggest influence on Dishonored) are cheap on gog.com.

I used to play the first one way, way back, but ... I hate zombies! I could handle the Weepers, because they were still human but ugh, zombies.

But I might try it again, it's been a few years and I was... about 13 back then, after all!

The zombies are scary when you first run into them, but after a while they become just another hazard to knock over. If I'm doing one of the undead levels (like Bonehoard) I usually bring holy water and flash bombs to deal with large groups of the things, but mostly they're not a threat.

Now, Hammer Haunts? Brrr.

Yeah, I guess it had a lot to do with my age and my inability to properly play the game back then - one level, everything was all normal and then it went "go through that old abandoned mines" and all of a sudden ZOMBIES. I seriously wasn't expecting them ...

Nobody was expecting them :) I think they were a holdover when Thief was meant to be something called "Dark Camelot." Personally I think they add a lot of necessary flavor to Thief, changing things up. Thief 2 did away with undead almost entirely (I think there's maybe six undead altogether, not counting one or two nonthreatening ghosts) but Thief 3 brought them back in full force, with a new, horrifying Silent Hill-ish wrinkle in The Cradle.

Well. I think I'll have to look into it again sometime, then!

The little Thief tutorial shoutout in Dishonored was awesome as well.

If it weren't for The Walking Dead, DH would be my game of the year last year. It's pretty much a crazy mash-up of Thief, Bioshock and Deus Ex with visual elements from Half-Life 2, all games that I really enjoy.

If you like Dishonored, go get yourself the Thief games off gog.com, as Dishonored draws the most influence from that series.

Yes. Its brilliant.
Nothing more to add.
Stop dicking around and get it.

Very much so! Not only was it a lot of fun to play (and the stealth elements were so well implemented and satisfying) but the story was damned good and compelling. So was the cast and the writing, and the art style was quite stunning too. It was just a great, polished game with a good bit of replay value.

Now I wanna play again...

Well now I want to play Jet Set Radio.

YOU SHOULD. You might've already heard but there's a downloadable HD version now.

If they had released the game on a disk I'd have bought it again. I still have my copies of Jet Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future so it isn't necessary, but...yea.)

It's quite good and I enjoyed it a lot. The gameplay is really fun, story was meh though.

I loved it and would highly recommend it.

While I enjoy games, it usually takes me forever to get through them, because I typically bounce around from one interest to the next. Dishonored so enchanted me that I finished it within a week -- and then immediately started it over.

I haven't beat it, but Dishonored is fabulous and you should play it. Hell, everyone should.

Re: Dishonored

YES

It is my favourite game for the near future ;___; if you love climbing, exploring, seeing the results of your choices (even the order you explore changes some conversations/acts you can lurk in on) and the asthetics are so pretty omg play it

Re: Dishonored

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
GET IT. The controls and movement you're capable of have made every other 1st person game before or since feel incredibly static to me. The atmosphere is fantastic and it has excellent replay value.

It was a lot of fun!

...Though I still have yet to play it properly, I think. I went for the no alarms, no kills, no powers trophies the first time around so it was more like an advanced stealth simulator than magic steampunk time >>

I really need to play on High Chaos as well - so far, the only thing I did was running amok in the "Return to the Tower" level. Not a soul survived.
