I actually find out the names of fandoms and such I'm not familiar with through Google's reverse image search, and then by searching for the clues I see coming up, if just the initial image search didn't give me all the information.
It really really helps when the secret makers name drop characters or any other clues in the text itself.
(And sometimes people beat me to the comments and someone mentions the name of a character or actor and I'm all like, "ah-ha!", and I look that up to see if it matches up with the secret.)
