Wasn't Fedora a main female character in the play of the same name who went around wearing that style of hat? (What the hell was it called before it was called a Fedora?) I associate fedoras with the Lloyd-Webber Phantom of the Opera musical because the title character wears one, and remember asking that question a couple of times because fanfic writers would call his hat a fedora, but the play Fedora came out in 1882 and the Phantom musical was set in 1881, so characters in Phantom wouldn't call it that.

Yep, that's the one! If my history is correct, it became a popular style of hat with ladies after that.
