I think I get what you mean. Have you tried Fruits Basket? It is the only series where the adorably nice sweetie genki lead has actual layers and depth enough to make me like her. In shojo media, the heroine is meant to b the stand-in for the reader so they are often times just walking cardboards of what girls are told to and thus inspire to be. Some series do give more depth or deconstruct the idea (Sailormoon has more realistic personality, Tohru in FB is far more complex. Other shows like Ouran try to make a different heroine but I think she isn't as unique as the creators wanted. Utena is a deconstruct of the ideal in a great way.)
