Miyavi is awesome. Kudos for you for having a great role model!

Where should I start if I want to try his music?

[personal profile] mondat 2013-06-24 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
...is he famous in Japan actually? Anyone?
I have never seen him on Japanese tv I think. I just know his face and name by the internet fandom.

But it's good to be inspired! Good luck on learning how to play a guitar! :)

He's always been fairly indie. He's awesome, but not really super well-known even in Japan, except among fans of VisKei and indies groups. I think he's most well-known because of his work with Gackt and Sugizo and co. His music is awesome, though.

Yeah, I learned of him when I was into visual kei and Gackt.

omg Gackt I can't believe... I used to be obsessed about him in his Moonchild days and now he's old and ugly.

Well his music videos were played on MTV when I was there so he's definitely not super obscure I'd say.

I've been here for almost 6 years and I really can't remember ever seeing him on tv haha. Well I guess it also depends on the interests of a person. I was into one V Kei/J-rock band a few years ago so I got to know a few singers or bands from the "scene" via other fans or the internet. My band split up and then....

But I am sure if I ask my husband he will have no idea who I am talking about :)

I think Miyavi is more old school, 90s and early 2000s is when I remember him being popular in western fandom, so that's probably when he was popular in Japan.

That's a shame really, but I can assure you that I am not talking out of my ass, t'was MTV.

[Picture is Japanese musician Miyavi.]

He inspired me to start learning to play the guitar. It sucks that nobody knows who he is because he's not famous here.

My cousin lives in McConservative, USA, and she completely adores Miyavi. She flew to Dallas for one of his concerts and met him backstage. They talked, she had her photo taken, and she completely fangirled all over him. It's one of her most favorite memories ever.

Take heart, OP. He's not unknown outside Japan. Not at all. C:

The ear-shrieking fangirls at the concert my BFF went to in San Francisco belies your 'not famous/no one knows who he is', though it's possible you're outside of the US (I am, and though he did have a few concerts in Canada during the same tour, I doubt a lot of people in my particular area would really know who he is).

But yes, Miyavi is awesome, and the BFF won a contest so she got to go backstage and meet him, and was so surprised by how nice he was too (and how soft his hands were considering how he plays guitar XD).

I loved Miyavi!! I say that in past tense because I don't really listen to him much anymore, but when I was in the fandom I loved him and his music :)

He actually came to my hometown!! I saw him at the Masquerade in Atlanta, it was one of the best days of my life. Perhaps he's not very well known, but for those of use who do know him he's well loved :)

I used to be a big fan of him and went to one of his gigs (it was AWESOME!) and he's a real talented guy, I'm not surprised cos I think many of his fans started to learn guitar bcos of him ;)

Good for you! I love Miyavi too! Honestly, I've been to a lot of live shows, but his was one of the greatest I've ever seen. He just has a ton of energy and lets it all go on stage.

Good luck on learning the guitar!! =D (I'm so psyched to see a Miyavi secret- you have no idea.)
