I understand why you say that. I think they're cute as hell but their relationship started kind of quickly, and I have to assume that a lot of googley eyes and such happened offscreen. That's an issue the show as a whole suffered from, how they didn't flesh out characters nearly as much as they could have. The series could have used a few more eps each season just to spend more time on some characters.

What, and leave no lacunae to be filled by fanfics?!

Perish the thought.

leaving some things to the imagination is fine, but the series left a bit too much out. particularly with WotD, it was spread far too thinly between all the established characters people cared about, and the new romans.

I completely disagree. I actually felt it was more forced with Barca, not so much with Pietros, but trying to give him a gladiator love interest in the prequel. It was supposed to be like "yeah, gladiators die, so not going to do that again", but it felt more like "well, let's put in some variety", while with Nasir and Agron, I could sort of imagine those guys hooking up in real life (though, possibly with more clothes on initially).

This is how I feel, too. You can actually see how their relationship progresses. The actor who played Agron really watches Nasir, who obviously stands out, and has fire him. Agron has recently lost his brother, and Nasir's only memory of home *is* his brother. A lot of season 2 has such a *new* feel to their relationship--especially since Nasir is getting his first real relationship after being fully free (and not having it dictated by his owner), and Agron never seemed interested in anyone before then (he didn't whore it up with anyone when the ludus got whores in season 1, if I remember correctly)...idk.

I always felt it was very natural. I also felt their issues in season 3 (feelings of inadequacy on both sides, jealousy, trust, etc) was felt pretty real and natural as well.

Yes, exactly. I can see how people could perceive it as rushed, but then, it was basically a combat situation, where you could die any day. People just tend to live to the fullest in that sort of circumstance. It always made sense to me. I didn't think them falling for each other was forced, and there definitely was progression to it.

Same. Barca/Pietros and Nasir/Agron felt very natural to me. Sure, Nasir/Agron happened kinda quickly but so did most of the relationships in this show (Crixus/Naevia, Gannicus/Sibyl, etc). Barca/Gnaeus (I think that was his name?) felt like it was just kind of tacked on because they didn't have a gay male couple in the prequel. It wasn't terrible but it did feel forced.

[Picture is Agron and Nasir, male characters from the TV show "Spartacus". Agron is clasping Nasir's shoulder and leaning slightly forwards. They are smiling at each other.]

I liked Barca and Pietros but Agron and Nasir's relationship felt forced, like DeKnight just wanted to include another gay couple on the show.

I don't agree at all. Agron and Nasir had more time together and way more character development; pretty much from their first meeting the show was hinting towards that relationship. Agron singled Nasir out and they bonded. You could see them learning about each other and the shift in their emotions as they came to genuinely care for each other. They grew both as individuals and as a couple; I thought it was one of the more realistic and natural relationships on the show.

*shrugs* But you're entitled to your opinion. Barca and Pietros certainly had their moments, but I thought Agron and Nasir were the more interesting couple.

Agreed on all counts.

That being said, I actually think Spartacus did well with a lot of the romances. I had at least a degree of fondness for almost all of the main couples.

I kind of agree. While their relationship was fast, it seemed natural - I just never saw them as being the super soul-mate true love poster boys a lot of fandom seems to see. I don't doubt they cared about each other, but I never saw them as very deeply in love.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-25 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I am interested why they didn't seem deeply in love to you. They definitely did to me, with the whole Agron leaving so Nasir could stay alive (and be happy with someone else) etc.
