It's perfectly fine to watch SNK only for Rivaille. Rivaille is badass.
(But I do think Rivaile manga version looks better)

Yes, a racist, fascist fantasty where all the poc on earth die except a token half exotic asian female. It's okay to watch because pretty boys!

Don't see any black titans do you?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, this comment literally numbed my brain for a second, that was the weirdest feeling.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That was your cognitive dissonance as you realized yet another way media was being racist. Don't lose it!

6/10, made me crack a smile.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
fucking

black titans

yes literally non-intelligent brutes who exist only to eat and destroy

let's make them black

this is in no way racist

+1

(Anonymous) 2013-06-25 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha this. I mean, more non-white characters would be great, but making only the titans black would probably give terrible unfortunate implications.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-25 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
HOW DO YOU KNOW THERE ARE NO BLACK TITANS? Those without skin might just as well be black. Check you skin-privilege!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-25 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
So I haven't seen Attack on Titan, but unless the characters are explicitly stated as white or the setting is somewhere with a high white population, I assume most of the characters in Japanese anime are Asian, specifically Japanese. Unless you don't count people of East Asian descent as PoC.

Unfortunately I can't find much information on black population in Japan. I've heard it's pretty low, but people tend to say a lot of conflicting things about Japan and Japanese people (also regarding racism/xenophobia.) What I can say is that black people seem pretty rare in anime, so it's weird that you're singling this one out, assuming you're not a troll.

Well, I liked it!

And angst is just something you gotta expect, with a lot of these drama series -- especially when it comes to historical tragedies.

Not familiar with this specific show, but I know K-Dramas and I am loving your "angst cannon" metaphor.

[Picture is a promotional poster of the Korean Drama "Bridal Mask".]

This drama took itself so seriously that I found it hilarious. I ended up not finishing it either because it was just getting too silly. I understand the premise is dark and gloomy but did they really have to fire angst cannons every five minutes?

Bonus secret: Shingeki no Kyojin anime makes me laugh for similar reasons. At this point I'm only watching it for Rivaille.

Notes.

The drama is about a masked hero leading a rebellion during the 1930s Japanese occupation of Korea.
