graphics tablets

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-06-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
several months ago I got a new laptop, and I've been fighting with my 10+ year old wacom graphire tablet ever since, because it's not Windows 8 compatible. Well I've had enough and I want a new tablet, but the market has changed a LOT since back in the day. Anyone have any recs for a good tablet that *IS* Win8 compatible? My budget is in the $100 range.

Well, Wacom is still the best and within your price range you can pretty much only get a small Wacom Bamboo. Which is alright, depending on the use you make of it, and remembering my old Graphire tablet I'm guessing the small size isn't much of a issue for you? The Bamboo line is for a more casual use, so it's less sensitive than the Intuos but if the lack of compatibility was your only issue with your old tablet and you don't particularly want to upgrade, it should be fine. The Bamboo line pretty much replaced the Graphire line.
It could also be worth it to look around for a used Intuos though, I personnally think their higher price is worth it if you plan to use your tablet a lot for illustrations or digital painting.

yeah I mostly just do doodles and occasionally illustrations for fanfic and whatnot. I'm looking at the Bamboo Create right now, and it looks pretty good, but there are a lot of other tablets that come in larger sizes/more sensitivity that cost the same or less (Monoprice, etc) and I wonder if they are any good.
Small size isn't an issue because I don't have much desk space anyway :p

If you've heard about Monoprice, you've probably already seen all the posts I can think of praising it and are just looking for someone to personally say it? (If not, I can link you some.) I do like mine, hasn't ever given me any trouble (though I don't haven't heard anything about Win8 driver compatibility nor actually owned a Wacom before).

No, I've just been looking on Amazon, I haven't gone looking for reviews because I prefer to ask questions to people who have used them :)

HERE'S THE LINK

http://www.amazon.com/Tursion-Graphic-Drawing-Capture-Tablet/dp/B008Y431CS/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1371642706&sr=8-4&keywords=turcom

When my wacom finally dies I'm going to be going with this in the future. All my fellow artist friends have recommended it to me.

Remember to check if your new/used tablet will run on a 64-bit system, or if it needs 32. A year and a half ago, Wacom still only wrote drivers for 32-bit.

This might have changed, but if it hasn't, and you end up with a Wacom on a 64-bit, it will be buggy.

Good luck and happy shopping, though!
