Malcolm in the Middle. Seriously, that pilot is literally flawless. Some of the best character-establishment writing I've ever seen. An awesome self-contained plot. No incongruity with the rest of the series - in fact, the pilot informs the whole show in ways that go way past just the set-up/premise. It touches on every single element that was integral to the show as a whole. And it's still probably my top favorite episode.

The pilot of Smallville is one of the only parts of the show that I actually loved. The show itself was blah for me, but the pilot was a frickin' great setup.

Also, not exactly a pilot, but "Where No Man Has Gone Before", the first-produced episode of Star Trek TOS after the failed pilot (although not the first broadcast) was amazing IMO. The different tone from the rest of TOS was really well-done and really struck a nerve.

Totally agree about Malcolm in the Middle and am inspired by your icon to add The West Wing to the list.

The scene where the President is introduced is still one of my favourites.

The West Wing's pilot as a whole isn't a favorite of mine, but so TOTALLY agreed with you on that scene! :) Apparently, Bartlet was initially planned to be just a recurring character, but Martin Sheen was so epic in that scene they made him a regular.
