Is it because he acts like a smarmy douche? I don't know the character, but he looks like a smarmy douche, I had the same thing with Chris Pine in the new Trek movies. Doucheyness presented as coolness always irritates me.

I did too, but I think it's partially because I read an article about how his design was composed of which parts of attractive male actors' faces the women in the studios found most attractive, thus implying he was designed to be the height of attractiveness. Which was a nice thought, I guess, but I don't find him attractive at all and I found him severely irritating for like half of the movie. (I think this might partially be because I liked Naveen so much more, or maybe because I'm hardly ever into the Disney dudes anyway.)

YES. He is a smarmy douche with kind of a Dreamworks smile, tbh. Also, floppy 90s hair and it's not the 90s.

I much preferred the concept art where he's kind of burly.

I loved the trailer where he was beaten up by Rapunzel. I thought he was just a side character, the prince who tried to free Rapunzel and it would turn out he was an asshole and Rapunzel would give him hell.

When he became the second protagonist I was sort of pissed off. Even after his character development I couldn't stop disliking him.
Had he been a female character everyone would have called him a stupid bitch. But male characters can be "dicks with a heart of gold" and I hate that trope in general, so...

PS: I will never stop thinking the look (and horse) were stolen from Dreamworks' Road to El Dorado. When I first saw him I thought Tulio and Miguel had a douchbag baby.
