While that could be an excuse makeup still only covers so much and not all women wear makeup (especially if we're talking a fantasy/fighting setting) so I'm inclined to agree with OP that it's bothersome.

Oh, I agree that it's bothersome. I just wondered if the explanation in this case (I'm not familiar with the canon) might be that the women are supposed to be made up.

The question would then be: why would they have to be made-up? It's a fantasy world; unless gender issues are part of the plot, then why make appearance so important to women but not to men? And that brings up the question of why, when gender issues are part of a fantasy plot, they must always be in line with real world conceptions. Can't we question gender by treating it differently in fiction? Why do we always have to play by the "rules?"
