I think it was Stephen King(?) that said inspiration was like a river of fire that flowed through your body; it came suddenly, it burned bright, and it demanded to get out of you. I always thought that was an apt way of describing it...

Write like hell, I say, and maybe in the future you can refine and off-handedly insert your OTP (or good plot ideas that come to you) into your novel. Or write a new novel. It's not like people aren't "polishing up" and publishing fanfic left and write these days.
