That's surely Peter S Beagle's wonderful "A Fine and Private Place".

One of my favorite titles of all time as well.

Yup! Personally, I think it's a shame it gets so overshadowed by The Last Unicorn.

I've been describing books on my shelves and I came very close to writing this one up. Great book.
