Your art really has to be either top notch (YMMV, obv.) or charmingly simple to get massive notes. I'm in a smaller fandom on tumblr and I've never seen a art piece get more than 200 notes.

yeah... I think my problem is I'm sort of mid-tier? Like, I'm objectively pretty decent, and I think I have some clever ideas, but I don't fall into either of the categories you described.
I had one piece of art that got a few hundred notes, but it didn't gain me any followers or anything and I've fallen back into obscurity since then so I don't even know anymore.

ehhh I think it's more like, if you are drawing fanart and if so what fandom you belong to, some people will reblog/like anything related to popular fandoms and I've found that to be the case. I mean, a pencil doodle of the three main characters of Kids on the Slope got more attention on tumblr and deviantart than anything else I've ever drawn, including stuff that took me hours and maybe even days to finish painting in Photoshop

In any case, I've learned to stop caring about notes on tumblr, I pay more attention to followers and even if I don't have a lot of those I know more people actually look at my drawings than like/comment on them
