I don't know what to tell you, some people love tumblr but I find it can be very isolating.

The GIFs thing doesn't bother me so much as scribbles that took someone no effort but ship "X/Y!!!" has a million notes and then someone who put effort into their art has like nothing.

As far as your own stuff goes, if you're drawing fanart people may find it later (if it's under the tags.) The one nice thing about tumblr is that it's pretty easy for people to find something later on if someone decides to reblog it.

And if you're looking for a following it can take time to establish. I have a few thousand followers but I'm constantly losing and gaining followers, I blame this on the face that tumblr makes it really hard to follow a lot of people (because it won't let you filter things or make groups.) I never lose as many followers on deviantart as I do on tumblr.

yeah, I see that too... there's not much connection between quality and number of notes.
I tag my stuff, but so far I haven't gotten much attention for my art. Maybe it's just not shiny enough or something, though I am decent.

I don't even know how to go about gaining followers - I have like 50, and it's been sitting around that number for a while now. I post some art and some fic, but *shrug*
