I was pretty shocked at how difficult it was to acclimate when i switched to Mac a few years ago. And then I discovered that you can really mess up the whole OS if you don't know what you're doing and that inhibited me further. I almost sent mine back because it was such a steep learning curve.

You can't hurt your system by adjusting display options or anything like that in the system preferences panel, so go ahead an play around with them to your heart's content. If there's something specific you want to change, google. I can guarantee that whatever you want to change has a forum post or tutorial already posted online because someone else wanted to change the exact same thing.

One of the biggest continued frustrations is browsers and flash. Chrome and Firefox are developed for Windows and then (poorly) adapted for Mac. And flash is a thousand times worse. Never automatically update flash because about half the time it literally does not work and reverting to a previous version can be a royal pain in the ass.

Tweaking your browser is possible and you can make it look exactly as it did on Windows if you want. I'm a Firefox user so I'm sorry I can't give you specifics on how to tweak it, but there are guides and tutorials and forum threads out there that can help you.

I don't know your financial situation so this may not be an option, but the book Switching to a Mac in the Portable Genius series was a huge help for me. I still refer to it occasionally for guidance on things I don't do on a regular basis. If buying it isn't an option, maybe your library has a copy or you could at least spend some time in a bookstore perusing a copy. You can take pictures of pages that you find particularly useful.

I found a website that may or may not help you with some of the things you want to do right away or may want to do in the near future. My experience when I switched was that just when I thought I was comfortable and knew what I was doing, something else would occur to me and then I was adrift all over again. It was probably about 6 months before that stopped happening to me.

Here's the website: http://myfirstmac.com/category_switching_from_windows.html

Here's an amazon link for the latest edition of Switching to a Mac: http://www.amazon.com/Switching-Portable-Genius-Paul-McFedries/dp/0470874406/

I forgot to include something about updating flash: when you get the notification that an update is available, google the new version/patch number and Mac to see what others are reporting about how compatible it is. There was an update about a year ago that took more than a month and three updates for Adobe to work out the issues for Mac, so never assume that if people are reporting problems that the next update resolves them.

that website will be useful, I'm sure of it. Thanks!
