I read the OP in Watson's voice and your response in Sherlock's.

Drop that twit like a hot rock. Even if she doesn't get a clue, you'd be better off.

[Picture is a screen-capture of the simple text program "Notepad".]

One of my friends is just so bloody *pretentious* about fandom. She talks about how Archive Of Our Own tags represent a ~specific fandom culture and how not letting people tag for silly things is ~oppressing them and how fannish people deserve more *rights* and *respects* from creators, and maybe even political recognition... blah blah blah. It's popping up on my dash all the *time* now, and I'm getting quite sick of it. She even drags it up in comments if the topic is slightly related to fandom. Blah.

Is this a friend you know in person?

Political recognition?

Yeah, that's what made me stop and go 'whut?', too.

The rest is typical over-entitled fan-whinging.

But that...that's a new kind of loony.

I am now trying to imagine the fandom political party and what kind of crazy shit they would try to pass through congress, like mandatory yaoi appreciation day, or national cosplay awareness week.

That would be fun to watch, from another continent of course, but still, maybe we can convince Australia to give it a whirl.

Mandatory Yaoi Appreciation Day sounds either really fun/hilarious or really terrifying.

Australia would probably make it awesome.

Not in Australia, you're more likely to end up in jail for child pornography.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
This confused me, too. Like, are we supposed to fight for equality with published authors? Because that's not going to happen, nor would most people in fandom want that, probably.

wat

(Anonymous) 2013-06-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That's...different. She doesn't really sound like someone who'd be all that fun to keep around.

Sounds like your friend would be fun at parties...

I wanted to go running for the hills just be reading that secret. How can you make someone like that your friend is she is driving you nuts?

Y'know, I'm actually pretty fascinated by fanfic culture and the tags are a part of that--the weird sort of hivemind where something really bizarre becomes commonplace to the point that its presence in a story doesn't need anymore than a word or two to make everyone nod and go "Ah, okay."

But she sounds a bit...precious.

I agree on the tags being a culture; just look at "Omega!verse" or the "Coffee Shop AU" or any of the fandom-specific stuff like "Pack Mom Stiles"

It's like learning a different language (especially when I try to introduce my mom to a certain fan-theory or prevailing trend).

Yuck, that does sound unpleasant. :x

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that there is a tag culture, but AO3 lets you tag with whatever you like. I've seen this idea before that AO3 restricts your tags (and honestly I think it should to increase searchability!) but it doesn't.

Tumblr savior or unfollow. Problem solved.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
political recognition is... interesting.
I actually find fan studies fascinating (not necessarily pretentious?) but this sounds like it's blended with SJ culture and that is terrifying 0_0

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
Tags on Tumblr, okay whatever. But tags on AO3 are there to help people search out things and shouldn't be an expression of OMG MY FEELS.

Your friend is a fucktwat.

Get the hell off tumblr. The place is infested with this sort of New Entitlement You're Oppressing Me social justice people who just ruin everything social justice is supposed to be about.
