"Squees" and "feels" are stupid and you didn't miss much.

Now if you aren't feeling "excited happiness" and "sadness" I understand why that feels bad.

I actually don't suggest telling your online friends about your disorder unless they're close. They'll likely either edge away from you or objectify you if they're the sort to use "squee" and "feel" language.

This, or start patronizing you.

Aren't "squee" and "feels" just sort of sillier names for the same thing?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I think they're louder. :)

haha, true. And nobody should be expected to be "loud enough" about their feelings before they are taken seriously. that's stupid.

[Picture is the photograph of a sheet of paper from a notebook next to a Sharpie brand permanent marker. With the sharpie, the following text was written on the paper:

Anhedonia: The loss of interest and enjoyment in all activities that you once liked. The feeling of not caring anymore.]

I didn't understand the "Squees" and the "Feels", which obviously means Doing Fandom Wrong. Except... I didn't care. Then I was diagnosed with Schizoid Personality Disorder. I haven't said anything to my fandom acquaintances. This explains things but solves nothing.

You're not doing fandom wrong. Squees and feels aren't necessary for being in a fandom. If your anhedonia is bothering you that's another thing altogether though. :(

Therapy can help with personality disorders, but seriously, you're not required to jump up and down shrieking to be having a good time. Not being as visibly enthusiastic as other people is not "doing fandom wrong". Get help if you're not happy, but it's none of anyone else's business if you're just... quietly happy.

Not being as visibly enthusiastic as other people is not "doing fandom wrong".

That's not doing life wrong either! Have they seriously started pathologizing people's level of enthusiasm now??

Something wrong with that imo.

Uhhh schizoid personality disorder diagnostic criteria covers a LOT more than levels of enthusiasm.

da

I've read that there's a debate whether Schizoid Personality Disorder is actually a personality disorder at all, since vast majority of people with it don't feel unhappy or inconvenienced by it.

This is great advice. Speaking from personal experience, therapy has helped me with my personality disorder a great deal, but it's fine not to get therapy if you're happy the way you are. If you aren't, though, you've got nothing to lose by trying it out with a therapist you trust and I highly recommend it.

Fandom is what you want it to be, IMO. If you don't get it, there's nothing wrong with that.

And here, I thought it was because I'm over the age of 30.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's not related? I participate in fandom, but don't get Squees or Feels, either. Then again, I also suffer from anhedonia (due to a mood disorder, not a personality disorder), so maybe it is.

Also, I just spent a couple of hours reading about personality disorders on Wikipedia, so thanks for that.
