I love them too! But I tend to like them when they're played for comedy. It's just as interesting in comedies, while also being a lot less painful. I love interesting variations on it too. Like how in Arrested Development, George Sr. was terrible to both GOB and Michael, but convinced GOB that Michael was always the favorite. Or how Lois was easier on Reese than Malcolm in Malcolm in the Middle even though Reese was the screw-up and Malcolm was the wunderkind, because Malcolm could take care of himself and Reese couldn't (and the ensuing weird absence of resentment between the two brothers). Or how both Frasier and Niles are convinced the other one was their father's favorite, when neither of them was his favorite. Or the constantly shifting and minutely wobbling situation with Bart and Lisa Simpson.

But played straight is awesome too. It's one of my favorite things about Everybody Loves Raymond (yeah, yeah, the show wasn't all-around brilliant, but the family dynamics were gloriously rendered). Hell, it's in the title! The whole Raymond-Robert relationship = perfect.

I wish there were more comedic works featuring this with two sisters. I can't think of any off the top of my head...
