I like how it's played with in Drowtales, where the ruling clan of the main city adopts commoner girls to raise alongside their true born daughters, and the commoner child basically serves as a protector and companion for the real one. They expect them to grow up into a rivalry, where the two girls will fight and one will kill the other, and the strongest will remain as the actual daughter in the family after proving her place.

There's one relationship that's actually been shown, where the commoner killed the true daughter, and inherited her place.
And a few others where the sisters actually get along and enjoy each other's companionship.
A lot more are an assumption as to what went on in the backstory.
