Wow, babysitter, yeah. 'Cause that's got *anything* to do with this. Because if you're reading and/or writing fic for the pairings, you pair people up. If you're writing gen fic, or focusing specifically one one paring, that's fine, too, but if you're going to pair people up? Then...you pair them up, and this is the pairing that is the most fun to me.

I do actually understand the concept of shipping, thanks. What I'm asking is why you NEED to pair both halves of another ship off.

you have to give Clint somebody competent and bad-ass and funny to hang around with (and possibly bang).

Why do you HAVE to do it? I get liking the ship and all but that sounds like you're somehow obligated to ship EVERYBODY. I see this mentality in a lot of fans (hence the pair the spares phenomenon) and I'm really asking why you can't have a single person hanging around with the couples?

Well....you can. Lots of fics have that. Lots and lots. But, frankly, most people like to pair people up.

It's the way it is. And 'have to' as in 'random oc doesn't cut it for Clint', mostly because too many people a)write horrible oc or b) won't read original characters even if they're well written.

And besides, it's sad to have interesting, complex, *fun* characters be forever the third wheel.
