I think the writing is the big problem for me with the character because I liked Quinto okay in the last film and didn't like him much at all in the new film. It really felt like they forgot how to write the character and just thought that giving him long lines that sounded complicated and formal, and making him not get human idoms somehow made him Spock.

I agree with those who say he was too emotional too. Yes Nimoy's Spock showed emotion like the time he smiled, but the key thing for me is that events like that were very rare and with Quinto's Spock they happen at least once in both movies so far. I see lots of human in the character I'm not seeing a lot of Vulcan control and Nimoy has that in spades.
