Just curious, how did it change your political views?

They were previously in favor of internment.

Crowd Of Attractive Japanese Women/Crowd Of Attractive Korean Women 2016

[Picture of the members of the female musical group "AKB48" in uniform.]

AKB48 has both changed my life and influenced my political views.

Young girls wearing short skirts perpetuating the normalcy of sexualizing high school 14-18-year-olds in Japan?

Or is it their complete lack of musical talent, inability to sing (except for screeching nasal everyone-sings-the-same-notes genius), or cheesy photo ops? Oh, it must be the lingerie sales!

Seriously, why is AKB popular. Oh wait. middle aged men.

Actually, the girls who are generally sexualized are older, at least over 18. Girls who are younger tend to be covered up a lot more (i.e., if there's anything on the beach involving swimsuits, they wear baggy/big swimsuits).

Some members do have a lot of musical talent (Matsui Sakiko is an amazing pianist, Iwasa Misaki is a gorgeous enka singer, Takahashi Minami, Yamamoto Sayaka, Natori Wakana, former member Masuda Yuka, Takeuchi Miyu, etc. etc.). Just because music isn't the main focus (they're idols, so they do a bit of everything) doesn't mean that there's value in AKB.

And their fanbase is about half male half female. If you look at their events, there's a very diverse crowd, and there was a survey in 2010 (and they've only grown in popularity/diversity since) showing that their fanbase is about half male and half female.

Seriously, you know nothing about AKB.

The era when Japan produced the best pop music in the world is but a beautiful memory now.

There's still really great stuff out there, even among idol artists! In fact, I'd say this is the best era for idol acts in terms of musical quality.

In fact, I'd say this is the best era for idol acts in terms of musical quality.

That's sad.

And the point is: idol acts are shit in general.

You clearly haven't heard much idol music, have you?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. If Johnny's and AKB-and-its-associates would just go away, the world would be better off for it.

AKB donated more than 1.2 billion yen to Earthquake relief, and has done many charity events/concerts. They've outdone companies like Nintendo and Sony by far.

Way I see it, world's doing just fine with AKB. :)

I'm really hoping this is something like: before I thought girls groups were stupid and embarrassing and girls who did it were whoring themselves out! But now I'm into a girl group and can see the merit of females doing it because they like it and men can go fuck themselves because it's not always about them!

Because I've seen this mindset with SNSD before. But for some reason I'm finding this hard to believe is the case.

[personal profile] writerserenyty 2013-06-28 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Good you can see the merit! I was pretty similar (I hated most pop music, tbh, and didn't get girl groups)but now I'm very much into girl groups. In fact, despite the flaws with the system, I think it does much more good for women and Japan as a whole than it does bad. I'm considering writing an essay about idol singers and the LGBT community.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
If you ever do it, could you link it here in f!s? That sounds interesting!

[personal profile] writerserenyty 2013-06-28 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
...Actually I can see this. Idol singers changed my life, and while it didn't change my political views I could actually see it (with stuff like Keibetsu Shiteita Aijou and Seifuku ga Jama wo Suru).

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
My gripe with that genderbending is that it's obviously a way to pair up Watson and Sherlock so it wouldn't be gay. If you're going to genderbend Watson, then genderbend Sherlock, too, IMO.

Damn it, commented on the wrong secret. Sorry.
