That is me and Harry Potter. I always decide I want to read some fics then give up like 15 minutes in. It doesn't help that a lot of the fic that people love is pretty terrible in retrospect.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe they read it and loved it when they were 12 and now have higher standards? I feel that way when I re-read potter or some buffy fic.

Yeah, that is what I meant. Like, I go back and read DBZ fic I loved when I was young. *shakes head* It's just terrible.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Word. There is still some that I love (GreenGecko's 'Snape Adopts Harry'-type series is still amazing, about the only of that genre I can stand anymore) but most of them I reread and slowly feel more and more ashamed of myself lol.

Dude! That series was one of the first long fanfics I ever read. What was it called? I think it started with an R? I kind of lost interest after all the OCs started taking up a lot of space, but that fic.....

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
Resonance, i think. Or thats one of the sequels?

I love all the ocs lol. The series felt like canon but better, to me. Similar feel and style, but better thought-out. It is almost a 2million word series though...XD

1. Find some Supernatural fic from authors you're already familiar with and like. Read it if it sounds like the plot isn't terrible and there's nothing you object to squick-wise.

2. As 1), but with fic recommended by authors you're familiar with and like. I agree with previous commenters when they say a lot of highly recommended fic is pretty shit, though, so maybe lower your standards.

3. Crossovers with other shows you like. SPN has a shitton of these. Maybe steer clear of that whole super-vengers-who-lock thing, though, since I'm stupid for crossovers and even I think that's a clusterfuck.

Anyway, that's my "new fandom fics" strategy. YMMV

Try some recs lists? You might still find stuff you hate, but there's always the possibility you'll find some authors and stories you really like then you can go from there.

there are several SPN rec comms on LJ, crack_impala, rocksalt-recs, etc.

SPN has so much fic output it's crazy, when I was still reading SPN fic I just followed a pairing specific comm and read pretty much everything that popped up on it and occasionally looked at the delicious tags.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
So don't read any. I don't. Is there a law that a fan must read fic?
tabaqui: (Default)

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-06-28 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
This comm is closed but it had a lot of good recs:
http://sawedoff-recs.livejournal.com/

Also, try the storyfinder comm - you can search the tags for tropes/pairings/etc that you like.
http://spnstoryfinders.livejournal.com/

And, as other said - read the SPN fic of authors you like/read what they rec.

The spnnewsletter over at LJ also has daily fic listings including gen and het, so you should be able to find something you like there. Good luck!

I second the rec for storyfinders: so if you know you like deanfic, or kid!fic, or angel!fic, or h/c, or whatever, you can find some that other people liked enough to go looking for; then grapevine off from that (find an author you like, find the stories they like, etc etc) :D

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Any recs?

AU of season 4, freaking amazing Dean(?)-voice, great concepts. MY actual favourite.

Good Omens crossover!

Maybe start our reading things by Sevenfists (she wrote s1&2 mainly) and things by britomart_is (glorious).

[Picture is Sam and Dean from the TV show "Supernatural" in a forest, pointing and laughing at something off-screen.]

I find the volume of fic for Supernatural so overwhelming that I just don't read it. I don't even know where to start.

This fandom can be v. alarming, but at least they're organized. I mean, you can find stuff for any kink/pairing/concept, no matter how specific. I kinda love that.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't found that to be the case, honestly. My guilty pleasure OTP is Dean/Ruby 1.0 and I have such a hard time finding fics for them. Finding fics for Dean/Cas on the other hand...

I know what you mean. I have this thing where I hate to ask for recs because I prefer venturing into a somewhat overwhelming pile of fics to decide for myself what's good, but with SPN I kind of had to give up on that.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Don't start, man. I don't even like the show that much, but I was kind of curious to read some Destiel, and now I can't stop reading SPN fic. I've never seen such a prolific fandom. I'm embarrassingly addicted. I haven't read anything else in months.

Some of it is better than the show.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Watching the show, what kind of fic do you feel like you want? What is the show lacking, that you want more of? Fic of a specific couple? Studies of your favorite character? Domestic slice-of-life bits? Novel-length case-fics? Crack? AUs in which the same characters are cupcake bakers or [insert any occupation you can think of]?

Ever wondered 'What if...' the show had gone down one fork in the road instead of another? Trust me, someone else has and written fic.

1. Once you decide what you want, post at http://spnstoryfinders.livejournal.com/ and ask for recs. (Or check the tag, it's probably already there.)

2. When you find a fic you like, check the author's masterlist; you'll probably like the rest of their stuff too. See if they have any rec lists.

3. After you've exhausted that author's journal, return to step 1.

You'll be an addict in no time.

Use the spn tag of crack_van? It's a panfandom rec comm so you're more lucky to find stuff you like as a beginner. I always do this when I get into a new fandom and they have a tag for it there.
