Because getting published is a pain in the ass and takes luck, connections, and/or immunity to rejection, that's why.

All of this. If you're in it more for the joy of sharing your story more than trying to pay the bills with writing, working towards pro-publishing might not be worth the hassle.

Correction: Getting published by other people takes that, especially the immunity to rejection. I'll fully cop that it's a pain in the ass, though, especially if you're writing novels. Even writing short fiction, I spend a good chunk of every week hunting markets. And boy do I have stories to tell about the industry.

But self-pubbing doesn't have near the stigma it used to. Five years ago, it was the Kiss of Death, and now most people are going "eh, why not?"

That being said, I wrote fanfic for years before breaking out of it and starting to write my own stories--and it was simply for lack of plots I couldn't slide fandom characters into. All I was getting was ideas for fanfic, not original fic. So it may just be a matter of that.

I still won't touch anything self-published with a ten-foot pole and I think a lot of people feel the same way.

I will, if it's by someone I know, or if it's recommended by someone I know. I know one (bestselling) writer who had this weird little quirky thing that traditional publishers wouldn't touch (because it was Too Weird and Didn't Fit Comfortably into a Category), but I bought it and it's one of the best (and funniest) things I've ever read.

I will freely admit that those cases are few and far between, however. Amazon's "Look Inside" feature is a godsend.

I consider any original story posted online for public consumption self-publishing, and I've found some gorgeous fiction that way. Self-publishing for pay, yeah, I'm more leery about it, but only if I haven't read the author's stuff somewhere before. I don't buy any book cold anymore, whether professionally published or not.

I found David Wellington's stuff that way. There's as much shit in professionally published things in some cases.
