Since most of them brag about never having read the books or stories, I doubt their minds can GET any tinier.

Well, I'd have to say that anyone who thinks Elementary has anything to do with ACD's canon (except for surface similarities) has absolutely not read the canon.

Elementary is genderswapped OOC fanfic. And I say that as someone who watches and enjoys it as a crime drama, and a passing resemblance to ACD's characters and stories.

(another anon)

i agree with this so much.
Elementary is very refreshing to watch because it is so different from ACD that you're not constantly trying to play 'spot the differences' while BBC Sherlock is more of a tribute that nudges/does references at the books. so anyone who hasn't read the books and watches BBC- you don't know what you're missing.

Honestly, pretty much everything except Granada is OOC fanfic. BBC Sherlock is a modern AU that reuses old tropes, Elementary is basically a genderswapped original story that uses old names, and the Guy Ritchie movies are steampunk action comedies with some names and overall plot arcs tacked on.

I hate it when BBC fans bash Elementary for not being faithful to ACD canon. At least Elementary doesn't pretend to be faithful to ACD canon, as opposed to BBC!Sherlock, which claims it's a totally accurate adaptation. It's really not. At all.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
No one associated with Sherlock (that I've ever seen/heard) says that Sherlock is a 'totally accurate adaptation'. That is absurd. link to proof of this statement!

But it is one million times closer to the canon (and I've read ALL of the canon) than Elementary can ever hope to be.

I find it hard to believe that you have read any of the canon material, or seen Sherlock, based on this ridiculous comment.

Try again; none of the adaptations are remotely close to canon

I've read all the canon, too (except for Gloria Scott, simply because every copy I've found has been graffitied beyond belief) and I can say beyond doubt that none of the current adaptations are close to canon. What upon original viewing appears to be sticking loyally to the books are actually references that are occasionally amusing, which Sherlock does in abundance and Elementary completely eschews in favor of cases that are also completely not related to canon. And if you want proof that some insane Sherlockians believe their show is perfectly accurate to the originals, please visit Tumblr. (A word of advice: don't, you'll come out of it with a gross hatred of humanity. Unless you're a troll, in which case your hatred of humanity has already been cemented and it's too late for you.)

Uh, thanks!

For those interested all of Sherlock Holmes canon is available free. Enjoy!

I've read all of ACD canon. Most of it at least twice (once when I was like 11/12 and once later) and some more. And I don't see BBC Sherlock as being faithful to canon. I enjoy most of it (there are points, like the second episode that I do not), but it is not really at all close to canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
In the initial interviews (the first year it started airing) Moffat and Gatiss never said the show was accurate to Canon, BUT they went on and on (and on and on and on and ... well you get the picture) about how they both luuuuuuurved the Canon so much, they would talk about the Canon for hours, and they wanted to do a modern adaptation that was respectful to the Canon.

All the recent interviews see them babbling about they are uber-proud of their Basil Rathbone remake.

So. /stillbitteromg

I find I'm a lot happier if, whenever Moffat and Gatiss open their mouths, I just cover my ears and go "laa laa laa laa." Then I can at least pretend some of the unfortunate implications with the show are just misinterpretations rather than the two of them flat out admitting to them.

Amen.

Can't comment on Elementary but as a canon fan, Sherlock is severely lacking.

Granada FTW, that is all.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Same for anyone who thinks Sherlock is canon. Pfft. It's based on the Universal movies, only with a better Watson.
