These look interesting... But I'm afraid I can't manage without subtitles :/

You can get Mother India with subtitles, because I've watched it (and understood it!) and my Hindi is limited to basic greetings.

I have no idea where you'd get a copy though, since I get mine from my Indian roommate.

The Region 1 DVD releases of both films have English subtitles.

Most DVD's of these are not great DVD's but they're cheap and have subtitles. Check out Amazon or Ebay.

I recommend Sholay a lot.

For Criterion (and possibly other home video companies) to release movies, they need the rights of the original holders of the material. That's why a lot of Criterion movies end up going out of print--they lose the rights after a certain amount of years.

I'm not sure about any other Indian films, but Criterion recently got the rights to relase more Satyajit Ray films on video after many, many years, and they're going to be released in the next few months.

Film rights in India are an unholy mess, in all honesty, but I bet if Criterion wanted, they could pursue the US release rights of some of these films, or do something with some official film preservation entities in India. I'm pretty sure I saw BFI (British Film Institute) release some Indian art films, so follow what they did?

I think the OP is right that Criterion doesn't really care about Indian film at large, because well, the world art cinema community too is enormously ignorant. It's a shame.

[Pictures are two images from the films "Mother India" and "Sholay". In the image from "Sholay", a man is sitting on a motorcycle and another man is sitting on the first man's shoulders. In the image from "Mother India", a man is lovingly laying his arms on the arms of a woman from behind her. Both the man and the woman look happy.]

It irrationally annoys me that these two films don't have Criterion releases, particularly given how famous they are.

Jesus, Criterion Satyajit Ray was not the only Indian capable of making good movies. Is it too much to ask for a DVD with some extras? Or decent subtitles?

"Mother India" doesn't have a re-release? Seriously, of all movies.
