I agree, but that's why I'm not mad at the ending. It's bleak, but it fits the overarching tone and Joel's characterization. He was selfish to the core, and I despise him for what he did (my headcanon is Ellie grows to resent, then hate him, and she leaves him), but at least I understand why he did it. Still, that doesn't excuse what he did. I think a good number of fans probably agree with you too.

... selfish for saving her? Are you fucking kidding me?

She *wanted* to sacrifice herself. Are you fucking kidding me?

Easy. Because she was worth more then the human race. Fuck em.

This is how a good father things. Perhaps a bad human, but a good father.

Fun fact, if the game had been more scientifically accurate, they probably could have made a vaccine without killing Ellie and both parties could have gotten what they wanted. It's kind of why I can't be mad at Joel and am, instead, mad at the ending itself.

Wasn't the human race already messed up to begin with? I mean, think about it. There are only a pocket full of communities left, and those that didn't survive being infected have to face up against those that are, which can be billions that didn't know what was going to happen to them (pending if they didn't take care of themselves so their friends/loved ones wouldn't have to and live with the guilt).

Besides. How can you really go back to what you had after living that way for so long? It was twenty years that went by since the infection broke out and Ellie didn't even know what an ice cream truck was.

Spoilers for videogame The Last Of Us

[Picture is Ellie, from the videogame "The Last of Us". She's a teenager and is making a worried and somewhat wary face in the picture.]

I think that he should have left her to be sacrificed for the vaccine. She already knew that she was a sacrifice and he pretty much pissed over Tess' dying wish. How dare you fuck up the human race Joel?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
while they do leave it vague there is a file in the hospital that mentions that Ellie is not the first immune person they have dissected in hopes of a cure and that they have basically failed with around a dozen other immune people in the past. There's also the fact that the hospital seems to have about 3 doctors and a crapload of militia, so even if they do develop a vaccine it would require some damn good explaining for how the hell they are going to actually manufacture and distribute it across the country when they have no manufacturing capability and they lose half their men just traveling across the country, nevermind the fact that once word gets out they have a vaccine every half armed group of crazies in the western U.S. is going to be making a bee line for them.

In the end, Joel doesn't doom humanity, he just sees the fireflies false hope for what it is, an excuse they hold on to, its why Tommy left them, and what Joel eventually figures out. Even Marlene knows she is lying to herself in the final voice recordings she leaves, there is no clear hope of a cure, the fireflies continue on because that hope is the only thing keeping them alive.

woah

i really do like that explanation

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I never got the impression Ellie "knew she was the sacrifice". She asks Joel if he thinks the process of getting a cure from her will hurt. They both assume it will be little more than the drawing of blood. As Joel carries Ellie out Marlene claims it's "What Ellie would have wanted". Speculation on her part. Ellie later wakes up in the back of Joel's stolen truck and her first words are, "What am I wearing?" which paints a picture of the whole thing being sudden and with little explanation.

Maybe she would have made the choice to forfeit her life for mankind. Maybe she wouldn't have. Either way, nobody bothered to ask. There's bullshit on all ends and that's what makes the game great. Not feel good by any means, but great.

But Joel was the cool white male protagonist and he adopted her and people suck so [insert paragraph justifying what he did] and he is a cool dad so who cares what Ellie might have wanted. Men always > girls.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But nobody asked Ellie if she wanted to die!

She thought the process would just involve drawing some blood. If she truly consented to this and Joel denied her wishes then I can understand people being pissed off. But the Fireflies were going to cut open a girl's brain without her having any say in the matter. How is that not murder?

Sure 'the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few' etc but you at least have the curtsey to ask someone first before having them be that sacrifice or, yes, it is murder. Sexism has no place in it whatsoever. Joel is an asshole for how he went about it with slaughtering people left and right but it has nowt to do with his gender. I can see Tess doing the same thing had the roles been reversed and she'd been the one with Ellie all the way through the game (seriously, I wanna play a version of the game like that so much).
