idk if you're a bad writer or not, if I have horrible or good taste, or whatever, but it's your fic and nobody else's business when it comes to how you wanna write it

not meeting people's expectations does suck, but wouldn't you rather have people hate/love you for writing a fic you wanted to write? ((If that makes sense...))

Some time ago I started writing a fic about an incestual pairing. Character A has been attracted to Character B for some time yet has never acted on it because of the wrong, but then Character B discovers this and basically is 'Hell, why not?' Character A has many misgivings - this is not how Character B usually acts. Which gets confirmed when, while on Character's B Point Of View, it is clear B is tired of *things* and just choosing to stop trying so hard to be good and/or responsible.

Due to Real Life issues, I stopped updating.

And then this particular fandom exploded and incest became a thing. There were only two incest!fics older than mine, but later you could see the sudden shift: many, many new incest!fics. I still was part of fandom but not as frequently as I once used to. And now and then, when I read other authors' notes and the comments and the communities, somebody would say something about how my fic 'sold' them the idea of A/B pairing.

Which... well, I love the pairing, but my plot is basically about how wrong their relationship is, and how the only reason it happens is because Character B is fucked up. The important Point being that Character A is perfectly aware of the wrongness and the fucked-up-ness... because that's what gets me off, and that's how I like it.

But the new fics? Fluff, romance, domesticity, pen names. How can I even continue updating, when new comments to my fic tell me how sweet A/B is, how much in love they are? I feel like I totally failed as a writer, and that everybody is going to hate me if I finish the story the way I originally planned. So I just abandoned my fic.

Honestly, if people ship something, they'lll be shipping it no matter what the relationship portrayed in the fic actually is. I've seen an obviously abusive side pairing in a fic get "oh man they are so cute, will there be more?" types of responses. It's not your writing, it's just certain people enjoying literally any kind of interaction between their ship.

Aw, that's a shame. I really appreciate fics that take a fucked-up pairing and don't try to idealize it, but explore how fucked up it really is. It might not be so much that you've failed as a writer as that some readers only see their favorite pairing and barely note the nature of the portrayal. In my experience (in a fandom where incest pairings are the most popular), there's always going to be someone still going "aw, that's so romantic" even when when the skipping down the road to murder-suicide. But there'll still be people who crave the trainwreck, like I do.

I'm someone like you, and I'm always frustrated when I get a THATS SO CUTE reply to a really angsty story that shows how bad they are for each other. But if I was a fan of your writing (and I probably would be if I knew the fandom because I love incest fic) I would LOVE your fic. Because I like that messed up dynamic too, and I'd be so annoyed with all the idiots who thought it was cute shit. So, keep people like me in mind, and know we're out there and that fics like yours are appreciated ten times as much BECAUSE they're not crap fluff.
