Ahhhhhh god I loved The Walking Dead. Between it and The Devil's Playhouse, Telltale's my favorite game dev for punching me right in the emotions.

I just finished TWD and I'm totally freaking OBSESSED. I'm not even into zombie stuff normally, it bores me, but this GAME, man. So amazing.

Oh man, that game killed me. I sobbed SO HARD at the end. And during the game. Basically I was an emotional wreck with that game. Just all the characters, Clementine, ahhhhh

Clem. ;~; And Kenny, even if he hated me for half the game. *sigh*

I know, same here. It's so refreshing to be around a bunch of people who have REASONS for being the way they are. I might have hated Larry, but I at least understood why he was such a prick, and despite all his faults Lilly still loved him. And despite what Lilly ended up doing, I still understood why she broke down. It's an example of fantastic story-telling when you can see the motivations of even the characters you hate.

I also find games that give you a choice like that really interesting, and I don't necessarily think there has to be something wrong with that. There can be, of course, don't get me wrong -- but in some cases I think it can even be a healthy outlet for bad feelings.

Anyway, check out Blood Omen Legacy Of Kain if you haven't already! I think it was the first game I played with an ending like that. There's also Dragon Age Origins, of course.

mass effect 2 and 3, dragon age:origins

If you're into 2D point&clicks, try Trilby's Notes. It's the third in the Chzo Mythos series by Yahtzee Crowshaw (of Zero Punctuation), and they're all wonderful (and free!) games.

Planescape: Torment.

Killing yourself multiple times is part of the gameplay.

Also, Dragon Age: Origins.

I don't think there has to be something wrong with you, for you to enjoy having the choice in a game. I love having my character sacrifice themselves for the greater good, or just some beloved NPCs. It can make for excellent stories. Games can be safe places for so many interesting thought experiments that don't say anything serious about your mental state.

Lots of great recs in this thread, and I agree. We've got plenty of happy endings, and it's... the biggest sacrifice, really. The DXHR one is my preferred choice out of the four you're given in the game.
elaminator: (Mass Effect: Shep)

As others have said, Mass Effect and Dragon Age are good examples. ...Maybe Skyrim? I have yet to finish so I'm not sure that's an option, but considering how open world it is I feel like it should be.

I don't think there's anything wrong with you, but I don't share the sentiment. With most media I'm fine with tragedy and death, hell, am for plenty of games too, but if it's one I customize and spend 40+ hours with? No way am I killing that character given the choice.

Spec Ops: The Line

in fact everybody just play Spec Ops: The Line for any reason

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
God, the Human Revolution suicide ending was so fucking stupid. It didn't make a lick of sense. I've heard people parroting Eliza saying it's so everyone can make up their own minds about what happened, but that is complete and utter bullshit.

"Oh, I don't want to manipulate society because that would be horrible, so instead I'll MURDER HUNDREDS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE AND MAKE SURE NOBODY LEARNS ANYTHING, LEAVING EVERYONE DOOMED TO REPEAT HISTORY'S MISTAKES".

Or you could, shit I don't know, tell the truth?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that irked me most about the suicide ending was that I feel like suicide was a great ending for a playthrough as Adam "I didn't ask for this" Jenson. That's how I was playing, but the fact that you had to kill the whole base (when I'd been playing non-lethal the whole time!) ruined it a bit. I wish the suicide option would have just been you can't bare to make the choice yourself, so you go off yourself and leave it to everyone else.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Have_No_Mouth,_and_I_Must_Scream_(computer_game)

A really old game, might be hard or impossible to find, but the actual point of the game is to kill yourself, the main characters.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way with books in the first-person narration where the narrator dies.

But I can't ask for recs because of the spoilers :P

warning for suicide

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-06-29 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Pictures are from video games. The first one is from "Fallout 3", with the shadowed figure of a man and a dog walking to the horizon on a deserted city. The second one is from "Deus Ex: Human Revolution", with Adam Jensen, the protagonist, wearing a high-collared jacket and turtle-neck sweater, while various pieces of glass explode around them showing different people and scenes. The third one is from "Infamous 2", with Cole MacGrath wielding a red energy and a blue energy in each hand.]

I like games where, as the main character, I can choose to die at the end. I'm worried about what this says about me, and so I'm scared to ask for recs. Pictures obviously related.

Just to clarify a little, the first image is of the Lone Wanderer, the player's character, and his dog Dogmeat. :)

You do a fantastic job with these, keep it up! :D

Well if you play FFVIII with the headcanon of Squall being dead the entire time, the game is really interesting.

Or even FF7, back before the extended universe and it was ambiguous as to whether or not the Planet decided to wipe out humanity.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
dead as in the entire game is an hallucination or dead as in he's kind of a ghost so people can see him and interact with him or...?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
Dead as it's all a hallucination as his brain is dying. The ending makes a fuckton more sense if you play it in that way.
