So you're concerned because Eddie van Blundht impersonated Luke Skywalker, and by doing so looked like Mark Hamill? And that says something bad about fandom, or something?

I guess I'm a little confused. I mean, that woman was an extreme Star Wars fan, sure, but it wasn't THAT BIG of the episode. She just was infatuated with Star Wars, someone came along who looked like Luke Skywalker, and she was convinced. I mean, Eddie van Blundht was able to not only impersonate Mulder, but convinced and nearly seduced Scully. I don't think this really is saying anything bad about fandom.

...This is not a statement about fandom? I mentioned RPF because I don't generally have a problem with people writing fiction about real folks. I'm saying that the idea of the character making himself look like a real person really wigged me out and I don't know why because it's irrational given that I usually don't care about fiction concerning real people or how fannish anyone gets over a celebrity.

Oh, ok, now that you explain it that makes more sense.

Pretty sure he presented himself as Luke Skywalker, who is still a fictional character, and not the actor Mark Hamill. Otherwise she would have said Mark Hamill.

This is still one of my favorite episodes (and I was chuffed I recognized that pic right away) but yeah, it's a bit weird that it's humorous and involves a rape-by-deception storyline. It deserves some side-eye, not just for the Mark Hamill aspect.

I had never really thought of it that way, although I suppose it may well have been intended to mean Luke Skywalker in character, in costume etc? Referring to himself as Luke? I guess that's how I read it, otherwise it wouldn't make that much sense if it was Mark Hamill just as himself, the woman would have said "Mark Hamill".

I assume what happened was the guy made himself look like Mark Hamill, maybe put on a costume, and then presented himself as Luke Skywalker. The OP seems bothered that impersonating a real person was required in order to convince the woman he was Luke. Like, if I was a shapeshifter and wanted you to think I was the Doctor, I'd have to make myself look like Matt Smith or Tom Baker, etc. I would call myself "the Doctor" but look like one if the actors.

[Picture is a doctor in scrubs holding a newborn baby who has a tail.]

I usually don't worry about things like Real Person Fic or fans getting kind of insane (as long as they don't get creepy with the actual actors or whomever).

But, remember that X-Files episode with the shapeshifter with the tail who impregnated women by impersonating their husbands, but one of the women was single and she claimed she had been impregnated by Luke Skywalker? I have been majorly creeped out by this episode ever since I realized this meant the shapeshifter guy had to have made himself look like Mark Hamill.

I don't know why this bugs me so much. It's fiction. There is no shapeshifter and this never really happened. I should be more concerned with the rape in general than the fact that one of the people the shapeshifter impersonated in the story was a real person and not one of the fictional husbands who wasn't even given any characterization, especially since the woman who thought she knocked boots with Luke Skywalker seemed the least concerned of anyone.
