Males who write female characters

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired partly by secret 5. Should males be allowed to write female characters?

That is a stupid question and you should feel bad for asking it.

This is getting tiresome.

If you're going to troll at least get the smallest amount of knowledge about the people you're trying to be a strawman of.

Yes? As another anon mentioned, GC! And I'm thinking of Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, too.

I know you're trolling, but:

If men didn't write female characters, then all they'd write about would be men, and you'd get mad at them for that.

Don't advocate barring people from writing outside their personal demographic. Nobody will learn how to not be offensive if they're not given a chance to make mistakes and learn from them.

Nobody has the right to tell someone else what they are and aren't "allowed" to write.

I think all people should only be allowed to write about werewolves. This has nothing to do with my personal preferences at all, though, nope.

only if they're not being cocks about it

Jim C. Hines and John Scalzi. They both write female characters, and write them very, very well. Which is what should actually matter instead of the gender of the person doing the writing.

Try harder dude. Or go away.

I'll answer "no" if that means we get to form some sort of tactical response squad with cool uniforms and hunt down male authors and stop them from writing female characters. Rappelling in from the ceiling is mandatory.

No they shouldn't.

Nor should women be allowed to write male characters.

And let's not even talk about writing outside your own race. Ever hear of appropriation, you oppressive ass?

And, of course, this really should apply to real life, too. The only way to equality is complete segregation.

what the fuck do you mean "allowed"

Re: Males who write female characters

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This doesn't make sense even for the staunchest of SJWs. They're always complaining about female representation in media, so it doesn't really make sense to ban all men who create media from writing female characters. Then tv shows and books would just be even more of a sausage fest (especially when you consider how many of the writers and creators of tv shows are male). That's like saying that no white people should have shows/movies/etc including POCs but then turning around and saying "Wait, where the fuck are all the POC characters????".
