Okay, I like Tony, but I do recognize that he can be a total douchebag. His humor is often juvenile. He’s sometimes unprofessional and he whines, a lot. But I’m not really sure where the complaints about his competence in this thread are coming from – as far as I can tell, he helps solve cases.

But, I have to ask, secret poster, what about Gibbs? I mean, I like his character, but he is also an asshole. And everyone on the show can be very condescending (with maybe the exception of Palmer). All of the characters have their faults, some more than others.

This.

I don't watch NCIS much, but isn't it a good rule of thumb to make certain that characters in fiction have believable flaws, assuming that realism is one of the things that the series scriptwriters are trying to convey? You can complain all you like about characters X, Y, and Z having serious personality flaws which make them terribly unappealing, but if you take away those selfsame flaws, you are going to have a TV program full of Mary Sues and Marty Stus.

I am not the secret poster, but:

I don't like Tony because no what they're telling us, they're showing he's an incompetent frat-boy-class-clown asshole.

I really hate Gibbs, because he is an asshole, and everyone thinks he's God.

I think he's incompetent because he often has to be told basic things about how to do his job. He lacks intuition, which is necessary for solving mysteries. He's also exceptionally unprofessional and while that isn't exactly the same thing, it's definitely a contributing factor when he's dealing with victims, victims' families, and witnesses. Professional conduct is part of competence in his field.

I put it all down to poor writing because there were a few seasons in the middle of the run where he was shown to be the competent agent other characters say he is, and the offer for Rota was completely plausible. But he's almost completely back to who he was in the first couple of seasons: an overgrown frat boy more concerned with pulling the closest girl's pigtails than doing his job. It's literally like he hasn't learned anything as an NCIS agent, never mind his years as a police officer.

*weeps* I thought I was the only one who saw that.
