You're cruel. The map game was infamously unfair.

I don't have anything to say about the content; I just love you for making a secret about this show. Kid!me was too busy fantasizing about Greg Lee to get angry about anything.

I never even realized there was a show! I spent way too many hours playing those video games though. God those games were fun... Hmm, maybe I should buy them again.

[Picture is two promotional pictures of the children's TV game show "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" One of the pictures shows the cartoon character Carmen Sandiego, a woman with red lipstick and dark red hair wearing a red suit and a red hat with a yellow band around it, and she is raising a hand wearing a dark gray glove to pull down her hat, hiding her part of her face to obscure her identity. The other picture shows live action members of the TV game show.]

Kid Me would get so so angry when the contestants couldn't complete the final map round. Especially if it was South America! For fuck's sake that board had the least amount of countries!!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too! I studied maps in hopes of being on the show (never happened, of course, lol) and when another kid messed up, especially on South America, I would be so disappointed in them. YOU HAD ONE JOB.

I remember thinking the map game was crazy unfair with the time allotted. But I admit when people got the US and didn't know any....yeah. Right there with you.

Oh yes. And heaven forbid you got Africa. You were fucked if you got Africa.

Aw, Kid You was harsh. That map game looked hard as shit, even for the kids who knew their countries.

Did anyone have the board game? I wish I hadn't lost it D:

(Anonymous) 2013-07-01 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Not the board game, but I had the computer games! Wish they still worked for Windows 8.

I played the CD-I game SO MANY TIMES, even sometimes when I was in high school just because it was so much fun.

I'm 100% sure my sister could have beat the dreaded Africa map if she had ever been accepted (I'm pretty sure she applied at least once) because she has an amazing memory and loved stamps and maps as a kid.

Aww. The board game was great. Everyone had a blank map and you spun this thing to see which continent you could get, they were little puzzle pieces. Whoever filled their map first won. I always insisted on singing the theme song before we played :P

(Anonymous) 2013-07-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair the map was the hardest part of the game and was intended to be that way because PBS couldn't afford many grand prizes.

There is also a unaired episode were the gumshoe slipped and broke her arm on the Europe map during the final round and the second-place finisher had to run the map for her (and he won).

At least you're not like my friend whose mental illness has convinced her she has a fiance and stepdaughter. You'll be right, OP, IRL love is a different quality and richness, you'll find it one day unexpectedly, and it will complement fiction love very well.

When you spend so much time reading North-up maps, and then try to do the same thing correctly on a South-up map (from where you're standing) on the first try under pressure, you generally do poorly.

Yeah I could understand losing on, say, Africa, but South America? Has thirteen continental countries. If you couldn't memorize thirteen locations you didn't have much business being on the show.

...Or so my utterly jealous 10-year-old geography nerd self thought at the time.
