The thing about loving a fictional character is, nothing they do is to you. Their actions will affect you as a reader/viewer, hell yes, they'll make you feel so many things through their stories. That's a kind of love. But you'll never be the one to pick up their messes, never be the one to be hurt by their choices, never be the one they love and sacrifice things for. There's always a line between you and a fictional character: where you know them but they'll never know you.

So ... yes. You'll never love a real person the way you love a character. I don't think anyone can. They're two different modes of love.

Damn, that sums it up perfectly. It almost reminds me of people with unrequited crushes who paint up a fantasy of what their crush is like and their relationship with this person that does not correlate with reality.
