Those books were so....weird.

I mean, don't get me wrong, i love reading the details of how to tan a hide or cook rabbit or hunt with a sling. But c'mon, she invented EVERYTHING.

It's just nuts.

(Also - that cover is so atrocious. She looks like wrung-out washcloth.)

Cavemen weren't all that into fashion...

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
She herself looks like a cloth; the drawing is weird, though maybe it's supposed to remind you of cave paintings?

...why is she blonde?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
She was raised by cave people, but she was one of the "others" (more modern human). Her blonde hair and blue eyes were a big deal re: how the cave people behaved toward her.

Blonde makes sense to me; what I want to know is why she's white. Isn't it kind of early for that?

/doesn't actually know

I agree that's weird, but it's not even the most WTF thing in that series.

Ayla is like the original Mary Sue.

YES! This, exactly. And she was, what...thirteen or something? Just bizarre.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-01 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
From The Mammoth Hunters forward, I'll agree with that; the whole journey with everyone they meet deciding she's the best person ever gets old.

But when she was with the Clan, and in the first half of Valley of the Horses, hers was a fascinatingly rich survival story for me. She certainly didn't feel like an unrealistic person then.

Bow and arrow. Needle and thread. Domesticating animals. Creating sparks.

I love the series, but yes, the staggering number of innovations she just 'happened' to come up with...just not handled well.

Plus counting and hair braiding and didn't she invent some kind of clothing, too, plus the spear-thrower thing, too, that she evolved from her slingshot that she was a SURESHOT with, of course.

I was just amazed she didn't invent the internet.

I never read to the end of the series - did she ever get reunited with her son?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-01 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I've only gone through Shelters of Stone myself, but I think I read someone on the other thread mentioning there wasn't much Clan involvement in the last book. So I'm guessing not :(

You might want to check out Song of the Grey Wolf - it's a fic continuation of Durc's life once Ayla left, which I sometimes prefer to the later books in the actual series.

Huh, interesting. Thanks!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-01 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
No, she never sees Durc again.

Aw, that's too bad. That's one of the few things i'd have liked to have seen.

Don't waste money on the last book. In fact, don't waste time reading it. The wiki article synopsis is enough to tell you how suck it was.

Heee. Gotcha.
