It really gave her character a much needed update and placed her within a proper social context and standing.

Can you elaborate on that for me? Because there's a couple of directions you could be going with it, and I'd like to know which one you mean.

Adler in the original stories is good as Victorian society can get regarding a female character. She's basically just their version of a villain of the week with a novelty twist and undercurrents of perversity since a woman in power and outwitting men and dealing with disguises is just Victorian titillation and perversity regarding their moral values.

The modern version is those same vices only filtered through what early twentieth century society considers the rough equivalent. It is also more open about Holmes being the hero and not needing a mandatory twist ending, and also to be honest a woman like Adler would be attracted on some level to Holmes and it would be a real headfuck as she tried to work out whether she was attracted to his brain or body. I also feel it is somewhat ambiguous as to whether Ho,es really saves her superhero like, or whether that is just her dying fantasy as the chopper falls. Its only natural that the one person she was so obsessed about and attracted to as Holmes would be her final fantasy. It would probably be Watson or Lestrade's too.

Okay. For your first paragraph, I'm actually sort of with you, although I'm not sure to what extent ACD actually meant her to be the villain, since Holmes was more on her side than the King's by the end and most of the stories do follow Holmes' moral judgments.

It's your second paragraph where you lose me.

is also more open about Holmes being the hero and not needing a mandatory twist ending

What do you mean, more open? The original stories were very open about Holmes being the hero, even when he was subverting several social mores of the era. Holmes was actually quite modern for his time in going against some of his society's standards.

I also don't know what you mean about a mandatory twist ending. There were about four or five of the original stories were Holmes lost, most followed the pattern of Holmes solving the crime. Those few stories were designed to show fallibility and humanity in Holmes, allowing him to develop himself over the course of the stories, occasional falls and all.

and also to be honest a woman like Adler would be attracted on some level to Holmes and it would be a real headfuck as she tried to work out whether she was attracted to his brain or body

Um. What is 'a woman like Adler', and why would she automatically be attracted to Holmes? In the original canon, Irene barely met him, and had zero interest in him whatsoever - he was an obstacle she briefly had to overcome in order to live her life. In Sherlock, not only is Irene a lesbian, so her desire for him is a bit strange, but we're not really given any particular reason why she would be attracted.

Its only natural that the one person she was so obsessed about and attracted to as Holmes would be her final fantasy.

Thing is, again, there was no obsession in the original. Irene didn't care about Holmes. He appeared once in her life, as a threat, she briefly followed that up to see how dangerous he was, and then she took her HUSBAND and got out of London before she had to go up against Holmes more substantially. Holmes was implied to be impressed with her, requesting and keeping her picture from the King, but Irene seems to have said hi, bye, and vanished, never thinking of him again. This 'obsession' is entirely a fabrication of the update, not something sourced in the original at all.

Your first paragraph has merit, they did some interesting things updating her social position and the reactions to it. But the storyline and the character herself are not at all a clean update, and in fact are probably more regressive than progressive. More a throwback than an update, I would say.

Like you said, classic adler took her husband and went splitsville. This Adler doesn't have a husband, so she needed to get Holmes to fill that gap.

... Wow.

That's even more nonsenical given that this version was a lesbian.

Y'know, every girl needs a MAN. Even lesbians. :P

Oh, right! Silly me...

She's not a lesbian, she is bi. Most lesbians are if the right man comes along and Holmes was Adler's man. It was his magnificent brain and his thought processes which were so similar to hers, but there was just enough difference, he was operating on a higher level than her, that it fascinated her to the point of sexual excitement.

Brilliantly done. You really had people going for a bit, there, taking you completely seriously.

This is the best trolling I've seen on F!S in months.

Main anon who was taking them seriously up-thread here.

I concur. I did wonder, at the start, but just in case, you know? Still, expertly done, and I fell for it.
