a "pure sociopath", a "psychopath"

He's neither, according to Bryan Fuller, as he's able to experience empathy and regret. He's only referred to as such for lack of a better term.

Word of God, I know, but I'm not sure I'm 100% on board with Bryan Fuller here. Nothing that Hannibal's done so far has run contrary to sociopathy. I don't think he has empathy; I think he has very sharp perceptive skills that allow him to understand how people are feeling. However, to me, empathy implies a reflection of observed emotions within oneself. For example, anyone who has ever winced when someone else got cruelly mocked has experienced empathy. Hannibal would see an event like that and not feel it. He'd understand the pain, but no pain would be generated in himself.

Exactly. There's a big difference between being able to *recognise* emotions in others and being affected by them. That's why people can hurt you and when you're like "what the fuck?" they're like "oh shit, I didn't realise" -- they didn't recognise that you were hurt or what your emotional needs were or whatever -- and other people can hurt you fully cognisant of what they're doing and not give a shit. Hannibal is the latter.
