It's up to you what you do with it, but y'know, everything's been done before. Just look at how many books, shows, etc. exist in the world. But they do the same thing in different ways, and nobody is gonna do it the same way you do.

Even if your fears prove true, there's no reason not to take advantage of the opportunity you have by doing it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that.

I have this original story I have been developing with my friends since 2005. They occasionally pressure me to make it public as a book, but I resist. Not because I think it won't be the huge success they dream it'd be, but because I'm deathly afraid that people might like it and then become disappointed with the course of the story later on.

Also I have the feeling that a lot of things in it have since been done several times already and many just won't see anything special about it.

It sounds more like your friends want you to make it public for the pleasure of holding it in the physical form of a book, right in their hands, the results of their efforts and imaginations, rather than for it be a commercial success or something.

If you don't try, you'll never know what people will say. Some might agree with that sentiment, but there will be others who will love it.

Publishing it for the people who might like it seems more worthwhile than not publishing it for the people who might not like it.
