Kind of off-topic, but I have this hypothesis that real-life couples often but not always have the worst on-screen chemistry (and on-screen couples with great chemistry often but not always hate each other in real life). I can predict whether actors have been or have started hooking up with surprising accuracy long before any real life relationships is revealed.

I totally have this theory too! Maybe it's the fact that if they're dating IRL they usually need to play against that onscreen because their characters' have a different relationship dynamic, or maybe it's because they don't act 'enough' because they think their IRL chemistry will translate onto screen, but for whatever reason it seems to hold true a lot of the time.

this is how I feel about james roday & maggie lawson's relationship. i think they're super cute, but i don't feel any chemistry between shawn & jules. i never have; it feels super forced to me.

I agree with you in general, except for Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy who always had great chemistry, but then he stayed married for their whole relationship which was for the rest of his life, so maybe that angsty thing kept an edge.
