The DM knows that it bothers me but he won't put his foot down. First I was mad about his character change (and made sure everyone knew it), but I wasn't able to play in the session where he also changes into my animal, and the DM told me later, "You're going to be mad, he changes into [your animal] now!"

The problem is I technically came into the group later where this friend was there at the very beginning (therefore I feel I have less rights in controlling the game), he is good friends with the DM, and the DM in general likes to give us pretty strong control over our own characters.

There have already been about 3 sessions since I submitted this secret and I have not played in any of them, so I guess it's over :(

If the DM won't do anything, talk to your friend. Tell them the reason you're playing DnD is because it makes you feel unique and special and it's not special if someone else is doing the exact same thing. Ask him how he would feel if you tried to copy his character. The other thing is to switch your character to something else. Maybe there's a class your friend doesn't like to play? Switch to that. And if they still don't get it, be blunt about how they are making the game not fun for you and you're thinking of quitting. If that doesn't work, then at that point I'd leave the game.
