Sorry guys, I just kind of need a place to get this off my chest and not have it stewing around in me.

I feel pretty stupid, considering I nearly got hit by a large pick up truck tonight. It was pitch black, there are no street lights on my road or buildings that throw light on the street.

Three of my kittens had gone to go sit on the yellow line in the road because the road was warm-- and narrowly missed getting hit by a car. But when I looked the other way, I saw a huge fucking truck probably 100 ft away coming at a fairly good clip, and it would certainly hit the kittens.

I couldn't have stopped myself even if I wanted to. I ran into the road to scare the kittens off, but they knew me and trusted me so they didn't run right away, and by that time the truck was maybe ten feet away. They had to slow down pretty quick, and then they revved up and swerved around me and nearly clipped me.

I feel stupid. I endangered my own life without even thinking about it to save my kittens. I would have been heartbroken if they had been killed, but I still feel stupid that I risked my own life like that.

I feel even stupider because I already got hurt pretty badly tonight. Ever moved some furniture, and when you go to set it down, you scrape it on the outside of your leg, and across your ankle bone? Or had someone do that to you? Happened to me tonight, except it was an animal that weighs probably 2,000 lbs, and she slipped and dragged one of her hooves down my legs and across my ankle bone.

I just feel stupid tonight.

I haven't had an animal do that exact thing to me no - but I've had something similar happen when I used to ride horses. [Also, a horse slamming it's head into your's? OW!]

I...can't really say anything since, personally, I'd *rather* I do that than watch as they get squished. The only thing is I'm not sure I would - I'm kind of a coward.

and I think it's pretty admirable what you did for the kittens :c it's hard to think of your options when you're put on the spot like that and you just acted selflessly pretty much on impulse. you're their hero and you should feel proud of that and thankful that the trucker didn't hit you or them.

+1. I can understand being upset and feeling unsettled because that's normal in a situation like this, but what you did was pretty badass and selfless. I'm glad you're okay though, and hopefully you won't be put in another situation like that.

(And ouch about your leg! Feel better soon and take it easy!)

I like to think I'd risk my life for my kitties. I don't consider it a poor life choice at all, honestly.

keep them inside?

yes. they get hit by cars, and they eat birds, and they poop in my garden, and nothing on god's green earth stinks like cat poo. and, more importantly, i really don't want them getting hit by cars.

I highly suggest not dying for cats.

1) Glad you're okay.

2) Keep the kitties inside after dark, okay?

Thanks; they're barn cats, and do pretty much whatever they want to. I try to keep them inside after dark, trust me, but since they aren't technically pets, I can't put them in the house.

oh dear, yeah I agree kittens are not worth dying over but I'm glad you're all okay!

No idea what I'd do if my pets were like that and hopefully will never have to as it's a scary thought. I wouldn't want them to die/watch them die but at the same time I don't want to get run over!

Hope you're not too shaken. Maybe try to keep kitties inside as animals are not the most streetwise or seeable-on-the-road things

I'm glad you and your cats are okay. I don't think what you did was stupid; many of us consider our pets to be part of our family, and would be moved just as strongly to protect them as we would a child.

I agree with what other people have suggested about keeping the kittens indoors, if you can; as much as I understand the desire to let them have the freedom to roam outside, indoor cats tend to be safer, healthier, and longer-lived. I certainly don't judge people who do let their cats outside, but I keep mine in.

I hope your leg feels better soon, and that you and your cats stay safe.

Thanks for your concern, and I would love to keep the kittens inside, but since they're barn cats, and they and their mother are somewhat feral, there's really not much I can do except for teach them food is in the structure, and keep shooing them out of the road. :(

My housecats don't go outside, and the single one that does comes in well before dark.

Ah, I see. If you're dealing with semi-feral mousers rather than housepets, that would make it much more difficult to keep them indoors. I hope I didn't get too preachy about the indoor-cat thing. In any case, I hope they and you will continue to stay safe.
