Actually, all alcohol tastes very similar to me. It has a very "alcohol" taste, if that makes sense. I've tried a lot of different types of alcohol and mainly have found that even in super fruity cover-up drinks I can still taste that medicinal alcohol taste. So yeah, it all tastes bad to me. And before anyone tries, yes I've had "good alcohol", not just shitty cheap stuff.

That being said, I totally recognize that it taste differently to everyone else and would never be all "Why are you drinking that it tastes like shit!?"

Yes, this. I personally react poorly to the alcohol-taste in alcoholic drinks, but that's a personal taste issue; I don't think it reflects morally on people who DO like it, any more than I think liking Nutella reflects morally on people who enjoy it. (I wish I liked Nutella, but... no.)

I'm just happy to see someone else disliking Nutella. Everyone raves about it but I've tried several times and just do not like.

I've tried it multiple times too. It's just... I like chocolate, and I like nuts, but any time when the two are combined, the flavors just do things to each other that I don't like.

Yeah, there are some people for whom alcohol does have a distinctive taste. I think it might be a genetic thing (like people who can roll their tongue). I've had tastes of beer, champagne, sake, and other types of alcohol and they all have the same after taste to me.

Hmm, maybe. My sister is kind of like that, with the "everything with alcohol in it tastes like alcohol and it's all icky", but I'm not and neither is anyone else in my immediate family (or even my immediate extended family, that I can think of...if that's a term that makes sense).

Of course, my sister is young and I think she's going through her ~be different~ phase, but at the same time I'm not going to discount her tastes just because of that. Anyway it's her choice and no skin off my nose if she doesn't drink.

I can roll my tongue and all alcohol has the same aftertaste to me, haha. The genetic lottery had a blast with my DNA.

Yeah, same here. (-:

I'm not the OP, but I find all alcohol unpleasant because of the alcohol itself. I'm hypersensitive to taste so it always seems to hit me and it means that every alcoholic drink I've tried tastes really bitter. Sure, they all taste different, but they all have that bitterness to me so that the only alcoholic drink I like is a spiked milkshake because of all the sugar.

Having said that, I don't then say that everybody who likes alcohol is undeserving of my respect because what is this I don't even.

da

Same here. I've never had an alcoholic drink that wouldn't taste better without the alcohol.

^this.

I'm the same, except I gag if it's especially bad. Beer is the worst. I went to the Samuel Adams brewery in MA a few months ago with friends, and I had to pass my beer to people because I just couldn't drink it. I did enjoy eating the hops, though.

If you like milkshakes, I'd try mixing 2 parts juice concentrate and ice to a handle and making vodka fruit slushies. This was my poison of choice in college and everyone was a fan. Have to be careful though, because it's easy to drink a couple shots in minutes.

Some people are just really good at picking out the taste of alcohol from any drink. I've had beer, wine, vodka, gin, Kahlua even... the background tastes differ, but alcohol leaps out and punches my tongue with awfulness in nearly every drink I've had. I envy people whose taste buds don't obsess over alcohol, because being tipsy is fun and clearly it's not a chore getting there for most people the way it is with me.

Eh, I've tried several types of alcohol and it all tastes horrible to me. All I can taste is this horrible burning that makes me want to gag. So, I pretty much don't drink at all because of that. But, I certainly don't mind if other people drink.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
There was a time when people thought it was hilarious to pass me alcoholic drinks or candy that they thought the alcohol couldn't be tasted in, and yeah, it can and it all has the same underlying taste of ... alcohol.

I'm guessing it's like the infamous asparagus smell - some people register it, some people don't. I find it pretty awful regardless, except when mingled in a meal and certain cakes.

That said, if someone wants to drink some booze, why not? I sure as fuck eat and drink things that make other people wrinkle their noses.

The OP is obviously a complete teatotaller. If you haven't taken the time to acquire a taste for alcoholic drinks, they do taste terrible.

I say this as someone who has, at the most, only drunk two shots of alcoholic drink in my 30+ years of life. (One of them did actually taste nice, it was butterscotch rum.)
