Yeah because booze love is such a contested opinion.

This is kind of weird to me, because all the nerds I know appreciate a good drink. Maybe it's a cultural divide. There's a group of about 25 of us European WoW players who meet up every year to play board games and gossip together and enjoy some drinks. And I do mean enjoy and not just binge, we have professional bar tenders in the group who make delicious cocktails.

it is a cultural divide

Europe is laxer about alcohol and young people drinking it moderately, whereas in America it has the allure of the forbidden

America is black and white about everything. Learn that the world is shades of gray America, and more than fifty shades of it too!

If booze love among nerds is a rare thing, you:

A. have not met my friends
B. have NOT gone to Dragoncon.

^THIS. At least half the people that participate in the festivities at Dragon*Con do so moderately tipsy. Alcohol is in plentiful supply, from the bar in one of the con hotels (I think the Mariott?) to people bringing their own supplies for room parties.

The Marriott and Hyatt both let the alcohol flow pretty steadily, and the Hilton has Trader Vic's, which is KNOWN for its alcohol.

I don't know how many rooms I've been to (not even room parties), where the alcohol selection was better than most bars.

This is pretty true. I know I didn't party at all in high school, and I still am not really into the party scene, and I definitely didn't get the appeal of alcoholic drinks. I didn't tell people not to drink, but I was definitely one of the straight-laced people who silently judged people who liked to drink and party. Then I gave it a try, and I've really realized that a lot of it just tastes good, and it's possible to drink without drinking to get drunk.

Now I like beer, wine and going to bars with friends, whoops.

something about fandom tends to attract the puritanical.

It's probably not the truckloads of niche porn.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think I have never read something so bad and generalising.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
+1 holy shit talk about projecting

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You didn't read the secret this post is about? Because that is much worse and far more generalizing.

This point was spot on though. Fandom is full of judgy people who like to go full retard on judgement because they are safe from getting stuffed in lockers in fandom and are enjoying a little taste of power themselves.
