(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 02:05 am (UTC)(link)That's funny, because the Elementary Sherlock is the only one (obligatory aside from Granada) who has felt close to Holmes from the books to me. I feel like he's the only version who didn't have his sense of genuine compassion almost entirely erased from his character.
But yeah, Elementary is totally a straight-up crime drama. Which is fine with me, I love crime dramas, but whenever I recommend it to people I always make sure to emphasize that its not like, a Sherlock Holmes style murder mystery. It's a standard cop drama with Sherlock Holmes characters.

You know Holmes dealt with many things aside from murder, right? In fact, I'd argue that a lot of adaptations focus way more on murder than canon ever did.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)I guess my wording was off, but my point was just that Sherlock Holmes stories these days are often adapted as murder mysteries, and are generally culturally recognized as such? At least in my experience? So someone going into Elementary might be expecting that, not a procedural cop drama, and might be disappointed... which is something I've been seeing happening online. Therefore, if I recommend the show to a friend, I would point that out to start with so they know what they're getting into.
