Fucked-up heartwarming?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
So, yesterday, that high school graduation secret made me think about the Malcolm in the Middle finale, and how what Lois did to Malcolm in it was simultaneously totally insane and fucked-up, and incredibly inspiring and heartwarming. And yet it doesn't make me feel conflicted, because it was perfect for that one specific context with those specific characters if you don't think of it as an applicable model for what people should do to their kids in real life.

So FS, are there any other moments that you find really adorable/sweet/awesome/feel-good when you see them in context, but you are also aware that they are totally messed-up if you try to explain it to someone unfamiliar with the characters/setting, or try to apply it to other situations?

I kept thinking that a combo of charisma and intellect has more to do with running a country than raw intellect alone and she should've aimed for Dewey for that instead and had Malcolm be an adviser or something.

In Red vs Blue, there's a scene where the most romantic thing Church tells Tex ends up being 'I forget you.' It's heartbreaking, but it makes perfect sense and is actually really sweet in context too.

And with politics nowadays, being super-smart is probably a lot more useful and applicable when working behind the scenes than being an elected public figure. And getting elected in the first place has a lot more to do with luck and teamwork than talent. But eh, Lois isn't terribly well-educated, so it's the sentiment that counts, not the particulars, I suppose ;)

/totally cried like a ridiculous little bitch at that episode

da

Aaaaaand you just gave me a mental image of old!Malcolm hanging around the White House/State Department/Federal Reserve glaring at idiot politicians and acting exactly like Toby Ziegler from The West Wing.

I think I like it. ^_^

I haven't seen that Red vs Blue scene, but you've reminded me of that bit in Good Will Hunting where Will's best friend wants to never see him again, because that would mean Will got out of the dumps and did something with his life. Is it anything similar?

Oh my god, I never quite realized my headcanon was that Toby was totally a seething angry bitter unpleasable bitch as teenager just like Malcolm was. CANNOT UNSEE XD

This is so easy to picture that it's kind of scary O.o

Not to mention it's actually kind of realistic for a smart but whiny teenager to evolve into an epically awesome bitchy adult if he gets the proper opportunities and development.

Wow, this got way off topic fast...

I have never seen The West Wing, but that sounds exactly like what Malcolm would do.

Wellll no. It meant that version of Tex ceased to exist. Without giving away too many details, it took place in a simulation. It was healthy for Church to some degree, until he was rescued just about immediately after. (His line after Tex vanishes is 'Well world, do your worst. Because I'm pretty sure I just did mine.')

Spike's entire role in the Buffy episode "Lover's Walk" is popping into my mind :D I mean, yeah, evil, insane, no conscience, Buffy hates him, totally dangerous, he'd kill them without hesitation, blah blah blah, but IDGAF. Him blubbering all over the place to her and Giles about being lonely and hanging out with Joyce drinking hot chocolate and angsting over Drusilla while Joyce is totally sweet and comforting to him was ~adorbs, and genuinely so :)

Oh, this. And how he's going find Drusilla, tie her up and torture her until she loves him again? In ANY OTHER CONTEXT it's just so SO SO WRONG.

But for them? It's perfect.

That's so true. Spike was adorable in that episode, but had it been another character, it would have been creepy and tons of dnw. Like even if it had been Angel. You'd have known he was Angelus and about to create some misery.

The SGA episode Miller's Crossing where Sheppard essentially guilt trips a man into allowing a wraith to feed on him so Rodney doesn't have to sacrifice himself to save his sisters life. (Yea, the man wasn't exactly innocent in the situation, but...it was still pretty fucked up.)

The episode "Home Sweet Home-diddly-dum-doodly" from The Simpsons where Homer "rescues" Bart and Lisa from getting baptized by Flanders and symbolically becoming part of the Flanders family with a big slow-mo NOOOOOOOOOOOOO and diving into the path of the baptism water. There's about 15 other Simpsons scenes that are similarly inappropriate/heartwarming, but that one stands out. :D

fffu i can't think of any specific examples, but basically, any time a jerk character is nice, even if they don't get nicer

in real life that shit would be part of the abusive cycle, but in fiction it's a-okay

same with sociopathic characters actually mustering up some affection

Yes, I fully agree. Some friends once asked me why I liked the manga so much, and the best I could do was say that it's really twisted, but it's so touching, and it works. (They couldn't get over the whole virgin cat-ears/tail thing.)

the entirety of the relationship between Lua and Ladd in Baccano. their relationship is completely fucked (Lua's greatest wish is to be murdered by Ladd one day and Ladd is a psychopath) but somehow adorable
