There's alcoholism in my family history, so I do get uncomfortable around reallly drunk people. Like, if you can't talk anymore or you are stumbling around, that shit bothers me.

Somebody who just gets red faced and chatty though, sways a bit but can make it to the bathroom and back, or anything less, no problem.

Yeah, that's totally understandable. I also feel really uncomfortable around people at that level of drunkenness, mostly because it usually sobers me up immediately and scares me. I always feel responsible/terrified something will happen to someone when they're that drunk, so I'm usually the person at parties and bars who fetches everyone water and forces them to drink it and sit down and stop drinking.

I love to drink, but I think your reaction is actually really common. Like, even if I've had more than I ought to, I still find myself really freaked out by the stumbly-slurry-close-talker drunks. I think there's just sort of a tipping point where a person goes from being "lol drunk" to an uncomfortable, sometimes even threatening, unknown quantity. Like, you don't know if they're going to vomit, fall over, start a fight or get really handsy, or if they're just going to keep swaying perilously and spitting on your cheek while they talk and miss all your "YOU ARE CREEPING ME OUT GET AWAY" signals.

I wonder if it's sort of an instinctive lizard-brain "They're sick! They might be contagious or hurt me." While before they're within the limits of play behavior?
