Your sense of taste DOES change as you age. Plus, acquired tastes exist; the first few times I tried beer I really didn't like it very much, but I acquired the taste and now I really like a good beer.

You're allowed to dislike what you dislike, but tastes can change over time.

and mine haven't (and i am very much past the age 18) so please stop insinuating that i and others like me are infantile for not liking alcohol.

I'm not insinuating anything, I'm just saying that it's possible tastes change.

Also, your tastes change in a major way around age 40-50, so it's not just when you hit that 18/21 mark.

A few years back they were saying it was around 25-27 because that's when our body changes actually go from changes brought on by puberty to changes brought on by adulthood. That's why people in their late 20's-30's go from generic alcohol consumption to wine or other 'flavorful' fermented drinks.

Oooh that's interesting -- that's about the age where I started liking drinking.

Although...... Maybe not the taste so much as the effects.

This is interesting, I used to drink a lot of lager, sometimes even the really strong ales and bitters, I liked Guinness. Then I can't remember making a choice, but I started only drinking wine. I have no interest in lager or ales at all anymore.

Notice how one of you is using the word mature, and the other is using the word change - one of these is rude, the other ain't.

Synonyms are a crime now? Mature just means reaching full development, which is exactly the right word to use here. Change is just a vague alternative.

"Mature" in this context has a lot of different connotations. Fully mature taste buds =/= fully mature person (there's a lot of judgment that rides on that connotation of the words). And fully mature taste buds do not necessarily enjoy alcohol because everyone is different.

I'm past 40, getting near 50. Alcohol *still* tastes horrible to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
that is actually correct. most of alcohol does taste better now when I am older :) you might be exclusion, but that is a well known quirk :)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
This. The first time I tried beer I thought it was horrible and now, several years later, I love beer.
