Opera is pretty color-blind nowadays, I thought? If you have the gift, you have the gift. Good luck, OP!!!

Opera is better than some industries, but it's still not perfect.

Don't know who she is, but love her name!

She's just as awesome as her name, anon. :)

[Picture is the singer Measha Brueggergosman on stage. She has slightly dark skin and brown hair in an afro style. She is wearing a glittering olive green dress without sleeves and matching jewelry. She is waving to the audience and smiling.]

She inspired me to pursue my dream to be an opera singer even though I worried about being black making it difficult.

I saw Measha on the Rick Mercer Report~ She seems like a pretty cool lady!

Good luck, OP! You can do anything you put your mind to! :D

She was on a boat singing to the whales, right? I think I saw that. XD

Look up Leontyne Price :D - another wonderful singer

heehee, I was skimming through the comments to see if anyone had mentioned her.

Firmly seconded.

(Also Marian Anderson, Kathleen Battle, Jessye Norman ... )

same anon from above

grew up listening to opera so Leontyne was the first one that sprung to mind [definitely agreeing with Jessye Norman and Marian Anderson as well. I don't think I've heard Kathleen Battle - or if I have, she's not registering]

also adding in Barbara Smith Conrad [who played Marian Anderson in a movie as well]

I've mostly heard her Mozart, but she sticks in my head because she was one of the first singers I became aware of who sang everything, not just opera and classical choral music but jazz and spirituals too. ~ a truly joyous voice.

She is all things fantastic.

Also, Denyce Graves needs a mention in this thread. I saw her as a child in "Carmen", and she is gorgeous across the board.

I just saw her when she hosted Canada Day on Parliament Hill, she is awesome! Though I spent most of the time trying to spot her feet, since I remembered she mentioned singing barefoot when she was on Project Runway Canada.

I don't doubt that it's difficult, but there's a long and illustrious history of black female opera singers. You might enjoy reading about Matilda Sissieretta Joyner Jones, who performed at many of the largest concert halls in the U.S., went on international tours, and had a solo written for her by Dvorak, all before 1900.

Then there is the queen of all, Leontyne Price. It is on her behalf that I get impatient when I hear pop stars called "diva." Leontyne was truly divine.

Good luck :D
